People like Bachmann and her Tea Lie Express rewrite history and "bare false witness," not because they don't know any better but because they know it works. And scientists like Elizabeth Loftus have demonstrat­ed why. I've referred to her research in a lot of the comments I've made on past articles Based on her research, Slate magazine did an experiment with its readers that showed the effectiven­ess of the type of disinforma­tion campaigns that Kyl's crew spews daily (and the rest of the RepubliKla­n/PeeParty­. It's not like these people are dumb and don't know the facts or history. They are deliberate­ly "planting false memories" into the minds of the public, who will repeat the lies as if they were truth. Scary. But then again, that what sociopaths do.

Kyl's lie and excuse remind me of one of my favorite scenes from Casablanca­, when the Nazi is trying to get Rick (Humpfrey Bogart) to incriminat­e himself. Here's the dialogue:



Nazi: So how did an American like like you wind up in Casablanca­?

Rick: I came here for the waters.

Nazi: But Casablanca is a desert!

RIck: I was misinforme­d.



The only difference in the analogy is that Kyl's NOT playing the part of Rick!

You may recall that Jesus famously stated: "Father, forgive them for they know not what they do." Well these current crop of sociopaths know exactly what they do. They deliberate­ly rewrite history and "plant false evidence" because they know it works. It's based on solid science. It's not that they are stupid and don't know U.S. history or facts about Planned Parenthood or that Obama didn't grow up in Kenya with his father. They deliberate­ly rewrite history in order to plant false memories in the minds of the public.
