I read the article with interest and found it to largely mirror the approach that many White progressives take in their analysis of this phenomenon. For the record, I voted for Obama before, and I'll vote for him again. Unlike many, I voted for Obama for President, NOT Messiah or to be a fax simile of Dr. King. Like most African Americans, I've been forced to take a sober account of the "powers that be" in this country.
We've never had the privilege or luxury to just assume that our representatives could take these powers on without a movement backing them up. We've had to be a great deal more practical in how we view the possibility structure in this country and what's realistic politically.
We KNOW how powerful the Conservative establishment is, how difficult change is and that it happens from the "bottom-up" not "top-down," unless you're part of the Conservative establishment. We saw what the Republicans did to ACORN, the low-income predominantly African American advocacy group, which successfully turned out the Black urban vote for Obama.

succeeded in destroying the only genuine grass roots national community org we had.
